Herniated Discs

The term herniated disc refers to the intervertebral disc of the spinal canal and/or the intervertebral hole when producing a nerve root compression and producing symptoms such as low back pain that frequently extends to a lower extremity, causing numbness of the limb and severe functional impotence of the legs.

The herniations occur:

• Its fibrous ring break
• Repeated traumatic overload that is submitted to the intervertebral disc.

The symptoms produced by the Herniated discs are:

• Pain:

Pain which varies in intensity, located in the lumbar region, and following the path of the affected nerve and which may even reach the toes. A typical example is sciatica which is the result of a lumbar disc herniation.

• Paresthesias:

Feelings like tingling, burning and numbness are nothing more than the confirmation that the nerve from the intervertebral disc is being compressed.

•  Disability of the lower extremities:

When the nerve compression is very marked, a weakness will occur in the affected leg, which if more serious can even prevent the feet from being moved, and in which case surgical intervention is required.
 

It is not very difficult to diagnose a herniated disc. One or more of the following methods are commonly used:

• Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Image
• Electromioneurografía
• Testing for proper neurofisiogical responses
• Thorough clinical examination by a specialist.

90% of all herniations heal over time with rest and physical therapy. Disc herniation may require the use of analgesic drugs such as Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen, or when severe pain is present Vicodin and Lortab.

Only 10% requires neurosurgical treatment. With the current advances in technical micro-surgical treatments the success rate is considerably high.

Patient are dismissed from the hospital only 24 hours after the surgical procedure. Eight days after healing of the skin a 4 week rehabilitation period consisting of phisio theraphy is initiate to aid in helping the patient in resuming a normal life.
