Irrational Fear: The Phobia

Phobias are an irrational fear that determines a compelling desire to avoid so feared, and although all we got to experience this feeling at some point, professionals who care for these disorders require that when reached the rank of phobia, conduct which leads to avoid anxiety becomes a wall, i.e., an inability which restricts the freedom of the subject who suffers from.

Tension that suffers from this person tends to be disproportionate in relation to real situations, although this fear victim is fully conscious that your fear is irrational, cannot handle it. We all know someone who experiences intense and persistent fear towards an object, situation, or specific activity as who loudly at the sight of blood or crippling to see a butterfly. It is a phobia usually hides a psychological problem originated in childhood.

Psychiatrists and psychologists agree that these extreme fears are defense mechanisms against anguish; rather than deal with it, the individual avoids it unconsciously deposited it on an object (such as an animal or weapon), or any situation which normally is not considered dangerous, as travel by metro or driving a car on the road. Why are said to be phobias, having deep motivations that go beyond the same object of fear, the "tip of the iceberg" a problem that you drag from childhood.

Women more manifested these disorders, and although there is no scientific explanation to this fact, experts are inclined to think that there are several factors: due to the own biological Constitution of women and their life cycles (menopause, menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth), or cultural, because they are often relegated to a second term factors. It is estimated that the group most at risk is that works and at the same time is housewife, because generally speaking phobias are common in people with many responsibilities, concerned about the productivity or seeking fame and success.

Types of phobias

Experts acknowledge that there is great diversity of phobias, but tend to group them into three basic types: simple or specific, social and agoraphobia. The agoraphobia is phobia with greater application of treatments. It is fear being alone or feel trapped in public spaces frequented or with difficult access to the output, and which can lead to who suffers not leave home without a known company.

Many children have anxiety when separated from their parents or traumatic experiences when they are alone, what determines when they are older suffering agoraphobia.

The agoraphobia is phobia with greater application of treatments, the fear to be alone or feel trapped in frequented public spaces

The agoraphobia hides most often aggressive impulses, and manifests itself in adulthood a crisis of anguish. The individual wakes up at night feeling that it is seriously ill, go to a clinic or your physician and are diagnosed with crisis of panic.

Social phobia is that most patients sends to the couch, and is characterized by fear to expose themselves to others. Fear of ridicule, fail in a task, losing the domain itself, falling or falter and to be ashamed or blush makes the affected avoid eating, drinking, write, and so on, i.e. anything publicly by simple to appear.

People with this disorder avoid attend meetings with people unknown (including family members), evade public speaking and up are dating. When the persons concerned are exposed to such situations, have palpitations, sweating, sonrojos, pains in the stomach or tremors.

When fear is concentrated in an only stimulus, is an object or a situation, it is a simple phobia. In these cases, the reason that causes is varied, including: animals (zoofobia), dogs (cinofobia), cats (gelofobia), insects (etomofobia), death (tanatofobia), blood (hematofobia), indoor (claustrophobia), height (acrophobia), diseases (nosofobia) or contagion (misofobia), and even the number 13 (triskaidekaphobia), clowns (coulrophobia), marriage (gamofobia) or sex (genofobia).

The percentage of people with simple phobias is very high, but this is difficult to determine, since hardly anyone goes to psychological or psychiatric services to treat them, since simple phobia usually does not assume an irreversible impediment in the life of the affected. These ailments are curable, since specialists have found very effective methods for rehabilitation, which consist of conduct with techniques of relaxation therapy as well as progressive exposure causing fear and group dynamics are sometimes excellent solution.

For more serious cases, we recommend include Pharmacotherapy, because medicines have shown its effectiveness to facilitate the resolution of such problems. Warm and significant relationships are important resource for the emotional security of the person suffering from the disorder.
