5% World Population Use Drugs
The number of drug users has increased year passed a 12
percent to 200 million people, equivalent to a 5 per cent of
the world's population, says the world drugs 2005, presented
in Vienna by the Office on drugs and crime (UNODC) UN report.
UNODC notes that in 2004 around 161 million people consumed
cannabis; 26.1 million amphetamines; 7.9 million Ecstasy;
13, some cocaine; 10.6 million heroin and 5.3 million other
drugs derived from opium. The estimated value of drugs
marketed worldwide is 321.600 million dollars in sales to
the retail, while volumes achieved by intermediaries
amounted to $ 94,000 million.
Meanwhile, sales of primary producers of drugs just over
12,800 million $. According to UNODC, who presented the
world drug report simultaneously in Vienna and in Stockholm,
the total value of drugs is equivalent to 0.9 per cent of
the gross domestic product (GDP) world.
The 200 million consumers, between 15 and 64 years of age,
110 million used drugs once a month and some 22 million
deforms daily, other tested some drugs at least once a year.
Most consumers found in North America and Europe, but
increases the number of users in the Asian and South
American countries through which passes the drug or narcotic
drugs are produced.
The report adds that cocaine, which focuses on Colombia,
Peru and Bolivia, production increased by 2004un two percent
to 687 tonnes (compared to 674 tons a year earlier),
although it is still 26 percent below levels record 1999.
Colombia continues to lead the market with a share of 50 per
cent, ahead of Peru with a 32por % and Bolivia with a 15
percent.

In the cultivation of the coca leaf, Colombia fell by
6,000 hectares, which was more than balanced by the
substantial increases in Peru and Bolivia. According to
UNODC report, 44 percent of the produced cocaine was seized
by the police, half in the countries of South America,
especially in Colombia.
In the cultivation of poppy and opium production,
Afghanistan remains the primary headache UN. In that
country, which is a large force international, military
occurred 17 percent more of opium, which contributed to a
global increase of 2 per cent, until 4,850 tons, with a
potential to produce 565 tons of heroin.
87 Per cent of opium produced in the world today comes from
Afghanistan. However, these figures are 16 percent than the
levels achieved in 1999. The two other large producers of
opium, Myanmar and Laos, substantially reduced their crops
and productions.
Furthermore, the level of production of cannabis increased
in 2003 (last available data) up to 42,000 tons, while
around 7,000 tonnes of cannabis resin were built so that
drug becomes by far the most produced and consumed in the
world.
Production of cannabis resin is concentrated by 80 percent
in Morocco, followed very far by Afghanistan and Pakistan.
According to the UN, a four per cent of the world's
population consumes cannabis, compared to 30 per cent who
smokes and 50 percent who drinks alcohol.
On the other hand, synthetic drugs, such as amphetamine,
methamphetamine and ecstasy, accumulated a total production
of 422 tonnes. This means a decrease in relation to the year
2000 even located far in excess of the level achieved a
decade ago, the UNODC report points out.
