Peru is the fourth country in the world with greatest occurrence of asthma. Two of each 10 children suffer from this disease. According to the official statistics of the health ministry, there are 4 million 500 thousand people with asthma in this country, on which 2 million live in Lima. I have visited Lima an although it was a very interesting city the pollution caused me sinusitis and swollen glands in my throat. Below an article found on a Chinese website:

'About 6 to 7 percent of Latin American people are suffering from asthma, the highest rate in the world, according to a study released by the Pan-American Health Organization on Tuesday, the World Asthma Day.

The study, carried out in 2003 in 11 Latin American countries, showed Latin America has about 300 million cases of the respiratory disease, and there will be 150 million more cases by 2025.

"This is a disease with serious consequences in the sub-continent, as it is not under adequate control," said the study.

According to the study, 79 percent of adults and 68 percent of children in Latin America said their daily activities were affected by the disease.

Over half of the patients were hospitalized last year, showed the study.

Almost all asthma patients in Latin America need information on the disease, it said.'

These are alarming numbers and without doubt a cry for education. Asthma is a chronic disease meaning it does not have cures. Fortunately it can perfectly controlled by following specific treatment. For this reason it is urgent that young and adult learn to identify the first symptoms of the pathology in order to avoid absurd hospitalizations and deaths.

The specialists have as goal to control the asthma to the extend of absence of all the signs of the disease. That is to say, to breathe well throughout the day, not to wake up during the night caused by breathlessness sensations, no exacerbations, no crisis experiences, avoidance of the need to visit an emergency room and prevention of the need to use rescue medication.

In order to avoid a direct bonding with the leading factors of bronchial inflammation one should do exercises regularly, stay away from smokers and visit a medical doctor every 6 months for a routine control.

It is further recommended to move away from animals with long hair, blinds, wardrobes, cushions and pillows with too much filling, ventilation grids, plush toys, carpets, and everything that allows the storage of mites and dust; two agents that considerably increase the possibilities of undergoing a relapse.

According to the official statistics of the health ministry, there are 4 million 500 thousand people with asthma in the country, on which 2 million live in Lima.

The incorrect use of the bronchodilators prevents that many asthmatic patients have a good quality of life. This is because some patients consider its effects not very effective, but this is untrue. The medicines help to surpass a crisis in a matter of seconds. According to a North American investigation, three fourth parts of the asthmatic bronchodilator users do not use this device suitably.

In spite of the advances of science, it is not known with exactitude what causes asthma. It is only known that certain factors will trigger it, like the viral infections, fungi, smoke from cigarettes, genetic inheritance, dust, etc.

It is known that with a comforting therapy the probability to reduce progresses of Asthma to a minimal is very likely. As well as there are inhalators and bronchodilators corticoids to avoid the obstruction of the respiratory routes; now the modifiers of leucotrienos exist that serve to control extreme asthma attacks.

According to statistics of the OMS there are 150 million asthmatics on this earth (half of the amount counted in the Chinese investigation). In the last decade one million patients died of asthmatic attacks from which 70% could have been avoided. In addition 97% of asthmatics in South America do not know how to control the disease and 79% of the adult patients recognize that this disease limits its life.
