The Syndrome Of Tourette
The syndrome of Tourette is a neurological upheaval that is characterized
by the existence of repeated involuntary movements and uncontrollable
sounds that are called tics. In some cases, such tics can accompany by
words and unsuitable phrases. But that thanks to recent evidences knows
that the syndrome of Tourette has hereditary and neuronal origin.
In 1825 the French neurologist George M. Gilles of the Tourette immortalized
the peculiar case of Marquise de Dampierre, lady of the nobility who during
her childhood underwent recurrent episodes in which she acted without
control and other people's to his will. To this disease also he has had
different synonymous names or like: Chronic tics multiple, Syndrome of
Gilles of the Tourette, Syndrome of Spasms Habitual, Paulitis, and Chronic
Motor Tic.
The fundamental cause is not known, present investigations suggest ay
an abnormality in the genes that causes that the metabolism of the cerebral
transmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and noropinefrina is affected.
Genetic investigations suggest the syndrome of Tourette is hereditary
of dominant way and that the gene (or the genes) involved can cause a
variable rank of symptoms in the different members from the family.
It can affect any ethnic group, but more in the men, a proportion from
4 to 1. The prevalence of this syndrome calculates in 2% of the general
population that can be a preservative estimation, because many people
with very slight tics can not be conscious of it and they never look for
medical attention.
The first symptoms usually consist of tics in the face, normally blinking.
With time, they appear other motor tics, like movements of the head, of
the neck, kicks. Often they emit unintelligible sounds, words or phrases.
There are two categories of tics:
Simple: they take part a limited number of muscles:
blinking, to gird the brow, to shake the head, etc.
Complexes: different coordinated movements in which
different muscular groups take part: to jump, to smell, to touch the nose,
to touch to other people, shout obscenities involuntarily (coprolalia),
constantly repeat the words of the others (echolalia), palilalia (continuous
pathological repetition of a word or phrase) or rutilantes conducts car.
I diagnose is made observing the symptoms and with an evaluation of familiar
history. In order to be able to give a diagnosis of Syndrome of Tourette,
the motor and acoustic tics must be present at least a year. There are
laboratory tests no that can diagnose the upheaval, are made to discard
other diseases.
It does not have cures for the syndrome of Tourette. Nevertheless, the
upheaval in many patient ones improves as it spends the time. The life
expectancy is not affected, is not a degenerative disease. Sometimes a
complete remission appears after the adolescence. Although the tics can
diminish with the age, is possible that the psychiatric upheavals neuro,
like the depression,
the attacks of panic, antisocial alterations of the mood and conducts,
can increase.
Lamentably, a useful medicine for all people with syndrome of Tourette
does not exist only. Also, there is no a medicine that eliminates all
the symptoms and all the medicines have indirect effect. In addition,
the medicines available for the syndrome of Tourette only can reduce specific
symptoms. Some patients who need medicines to reduce to the frequency
and intensity of the tics and can be dealt with neuroleptics drugs.
The scientists have discovered that the neuroleptics drug use in the
long term can cause an upheaval of involuntary movement that is called
discinesia delayed. Nevertheless, this condition usually disappears when
discontinuing the medicine. The indirect effect in the short term includes
muscular rigidity, dribbling, tremors, lack of face expression, slow movement
and uneasiness. This indirect effect can be reduced by means of drugs
used commonly to deal with the disease
Parkinson.
Other types of therapy can be useful. Although the psychological problems
do not cause the syndrome of Tourette, the psychotherapy can help the
person to also handle not only to the upheaval but the social and emotional
problems that happen sometimes. The techniques of relaxation and bioretroalimentación
can be useful to alleviate the stress
that can cause an increase of the symptoms of the tics.
